New Collars from a Special Grrl
A few months ago, I met Jessie Walrath on Twitter. Jessie is the head honcho (okay, she’s the only honcho) of Montana Grrl Critter Gear. I was impressed with her and her critter goodies back then; and when she offered a 10% discount to readers here, I was glad to share that. I don’t know if that discount code would still work, but she is often running a special of some kind, so don’t hesitate to get in touch with her and ask.
Well, I don’t know what took me so long to order some collars from her, but I finally did. And I’m happy to report that they did not disappoint! We love ’em!
In my other post, I already covered most of the things that I love about these collars, but a few things bear repeating:
- They are hand-made with love by Jessie herself! Listen, we can buy all the goods we could ever possibly need for our critters from big retailers. But I say support small business! Support a fellow dog lover! She works under the direct supervision of her two pooches, Bunter and Cubby.
- Every piece of the collar is very nice quality – From the fabric, to the interfacing, to the curved side release buckles, to the D-rings. Attention to detail is evident in all of the stitching.
- These collars are made of a sturdy cotton and are nylon-free! Many pets (including my Austin) have a sensitivity to nylon, and these collars are perfect for those who do.
- Along with collars, Jessie also produces leashes, key fobs, and bandanas. She has also recently started carrying Rubit dog tag clips – super handy little gizmos that allow you to quickly transition your pet’s tags between different collars or harnesses.
They are easily adjustable and fit well… although a small probably would’ve worked for Austin too.

They are pretty. We can’t have cotton collars, they just don’t hold up. We have tried several varieties and they never last and for me, the dirt magnet, they are always getting wet and yucky. Then my sister’s fur sticks to hers, so we have to go with ribbon/nylon ones but these are super cute.
I totally understand. We never really thought about it and had always used nylon collars until we got Austin. He has a definite sensitivity to nylon, so we have to use something else. Since they get walked with harnesses, we’re not too hard on collars around here. If I see that the cotton ones aren’t going to hold up (which I think they will for us), I might look into the hemp or bamboo. So fancy, lol. In the old days (okay, not that long ago) – we didn’t have so many options. There was nylon, leather, and chain. That was it. Now there are all kinds of choices!
The kids look fabulous in their new collars! Great colors! Weinerlock! Too perfect.
Thanks! They’re not quite as happy about them as I am… because… I used to let them “go naked” in the house, only putting their collars on for walks and going in the car. But after all the disasters and lost pets with no identification, I have decided that they need to wear them all the time. Microchips are awesome, but unfortunately lost pets don’t always get scanned for those and occasionally scanning will miss a chip. So you can’t rely on them 100%. Anyway, I’ve decided that they need to wears their collars all the time now and I waited until getting the cotton collars before enforcing that rule. I really hope they’re more comfortable.
And the wienerlock thing! My eyes just caught it by accident, and I thought, “Why yes… these ARE wienerlocks!”

They are beautiful! But the wieners aren’t happy that they don’t get to just “go naked” in the house anymore. Now that they have comfy (or comfi-ER) cotton collars, they gots to wear them all the time. They say BOOOO! But it’s for their safety.
We tend to have every day buckle collars that we walk in the woods with and then we also have our fancy collars for going to the vet or on vacation. I will definitely check her out the next time I’m in the market for a new collar.
Different collars for different occasions makes perfect sense!
I know that there are a lot of people out there who have TONS of collars for their dogs… like one for every day of the week and then some! But we just don’t buy a lot of collars around here. We use the same collars for well, as long as they last. But if we had larger dogs, I can see having to replace collars more often… or at least using different collars for different occasions like you.
We walk with harnesses, so the collars don’t get a lot of wear that way. If we walked with just collars alone, I don’t know how well cotton would hold up. These collars are a good thick sturdy cotton, but still… a lot of pulling (especially from a larger dog) might wear it out pretty quick.

She does have some great collars… I love that they’re hand-made and reasonably-priced. And she will pretty much do any fabric as a special request. Plus, she’s a super nice gal – and that always helps! It’s nice to give business to good people. 🙂
